Starwood announced today, via Flyertalk, the upcoming annual hotel category adjustments that will be in effect as of March 4th, 2014. There is no reason to panic though. Thankfully there is no major changes to the structure of the program and no new categories or pricing being announced, just the readjustment of some hotels either up or down a category.
Overall about 20% of Starwood hotels will be changing categories. Of those, a 56% majority of the hotels are going down and 46% of the hotels going up a category. That is 139 going down and 111 going up. I have briefly looked over the list and am not terribly surprised by any particular changes. More going down than up is always a plus…
That being said, I am extremely disappointed to see both the The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali & the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa are going up to a category 6. I had plans for a Maui trip this year but instead decided to push it back to 2015 and instead head to Disney World this year instead. I have been saving my Starpoints specifically for the Westin Maui but with the jump from 12,000-16,000/night to 20,000-25,000 per night just might be too big of pill for me to swallow.
You can see the full list of changes here. Keep in mind that you do have until March 4th to make reservations at the old rates. So check your travel plans and make your reservations now if you desired hotel is going up or hold of until March 4th if your lucky and your planned hotel is going down.
Are you surprised, disappointed, or excited about any specific hotel that is changing?
