About once or twice a year the sign-up promotion for the Lufthansa Premier Miles & More® World MasterCard® goes drastically up to 50,000 thousand bonus miles. I was considering picking this card up previously but the timing wasn’t right and now the offer is back again.
The offer is two-fold: The first 20,000 miles are earned after your first purchase. In order to obtain the additional 30,000 miles you will need to spend $5,000 within the first 90 days after opening the account. With all the opportunities to get some cheap and easy spending on your card, you should have no problem achieving this requirement. And if you do have problems just let me know.
The card does come with a $79 annual fee unless you are a Senator or HON Circle Member. I never like paying annual fees at all however, for $79 to get enough miles for 2 round trip domestic airfares or to get you to Europe and back is a pretty decent deal.
There are some real gems in the Miles & More program that make this an offer to consider. Just keep in mind that Lufthansa does add fuel surcharges to award flights but you can avoid the surcharges by booking flights on United or LOT Polish.
Domestic 1st Class: As a member of the Star Alliance, Miles & More awards can be redeemed for flights on United Airlines. A domestic economy ticket on United will run you the typical 25,000 miles for a round trip or 12,000 for a one-way. The real steal (at least for those who prefer 1st class/business class redemption’s) is the domestic 1st class awards on United which only require 35,000 miles round trip or 17,000 for a one-way. Mileage Bargains:
After spending the required $5,000 on your card you will walk away with a total of 55,000 miles. As you can see in the chart above, a round trip economy redemption to Europe can be had for 50,000 miles. However, if you are flexible this sign up bonus could become a lot more valuable. You can find options to Europe for 55,000 miles in business class (instead of 105,000) through Mileage Bargains.
It’s Not from Chase, Amex, or Citi:
It is nice to have some good options from an issuer besides the typical players. With Chase and Amex holding such a large section of the hotel & airline loyalty market, it can be tough to apply for cards without them all being at one bank. I prefer not to apply for more than one card per bank at a time.
Generous Stopover and Open-Jaw Rules:
A stopover is just that, a stop in a city other than your destination for more than 24 hours (otherwise it is just a layover). Maybe you are headed to Munich but want to stop in Paris for a few days, Munich would be your destination but Paris would be the stopover. An open-jaw would be flying in to one airport but departing out of another.
Unlike most programs, Lufthansa will allow you not just one but two stopovers and two open-jaws on a round trip redemption, with a few restrictions.
- Stopovers are only allowed on round trips crossing 2 or more regions.
- Only one stopover per direction on roundtrip awards only
- Stopovers must be in a different region than your departure
- Must be booked over the phone
If used correctly this can be a great offer with a lot of value. Even if you wanted to just use it for a couple domestic round trips, it would be well worth it. This offer is available for a limited time only and I’m not sure how long that will be. If I hear a deadline the I will let you know. Otherwise this is an offer to apply for sooner than later if you were looking for this card.
