In a not so shocking move, Delta has decided to seize the opportunity to do a little devaluing of their award chart now that everyone is upset about the United devaluation from last Friday. I doubt anyone is really that surprised by this move, but that doesn’t make it any less disappointing.
This is why most people who are avid mile and point collectors will tell you to earn & burn your points. Inflation is inevitable and the only thing you can do to hedge against it is to keeping earning and redeeming!
Delta put into play a new award chart effective immediately for travel from Feb 1 2014 – May 31st. It looks like they didn’t want to wait until June 1st for the devaluation that they had announced this past August and are now stepping them in.
Not only did they add the increases for the interim period of Feb 2014-May 2014 but it looks like Delta has also gone in and further increased the rate on many of the new award levels that were announced in August slated for June 2014.
Here is what the award chart with the original increases.
Here is a look at the new chart for June 1, 2014 and after. Notice the items highlighted in yellow are those that have been further increased since the original new chart for June 2014 was announced.
It was poor execution on Delta’s part to not give any warning. These new changes are effective on new award bookings starting today. At least United had the decency to give adequate notice. United’s deval changes do not go into effect immediately on new bookings but rather only on bookings made after 2/1/14.
I guess that is why we call them SkyPesos…..
