I’ve always been a fan of loyalty program formerly known as Priority Club. Sure it has never been my main hotel family but it has always stood out for a couple of major reasons.
The first of which is the ease of earning points. It is pretty easy to get points when IHG Rewards Club/Priority Club continually offers multiple promo codes that can be stacked. Here is an example of how I earned over 20,000 points from a two night stay at a Holiday Inn.
The second, and probably biggest reason I love IHG Rewards Club is because of Point Breaks!! Point Breaks is a selection of IHG properties around the world that are offered up for only 5,000 points per night. The list changes every couple of months and the current list is good through August 30th, so we should be due for an update list in the next week.
Anyway, I was opening my mail yesterday when I noticed an envelope from IHG Rewards Club that said “Welcome to Gold Elite”. That seemed a little odd considering I hit Gold Elite last fall and received my Gold Elite card valid through 2013. Since my stay at the Holiday Inn Resort in Daytona last October I have not been back to an IHG property, so I knew it couldn’t be a new card for hitting gold this year.
Upon opening the envelope I found the typical flyer welcoming me to Gold Elite status with a new IHG Gold Elite card. Along with the welcome package was the following letter. The letter introduced the re-branding of the loyalty program from the old Priority Club to the new name of IHG Rewards Club.
After the letter introduced the re-branding it went on to thank me for my continued loyalty by extending my Gold Elite status through 2014 even though I had not stayed a single night this year in an IHG property.
I have to say that I appreciate the gesture but find the timing all too ironic. I actually just applied for the IHG Rewards Club credit card on Sunday night through a targeted 80,000 bonus points offer. One of the perks of the card is Platinum status for as long as you hold the card. Ironic.
