50,000 Bonus Miles with Lufthansa Credit Card Bookable for Cheap 1st Class on United

I’m sure many of you haven’t had much experience with Miles & More but any offer of 50,000 miles on airline is worth looking into. This is the largest sign-up bonus I have seen for Lufthansa. Barclay Card is currently offering a limited time offer for The Lufthansa Premier Miles & More World MasterCard® giving out 50,000 miles which is enough for 2 domestic round-trips or a transatlantic round trip!

There can be some good value to be had with Lufthansa miles. As Lufthansa is a member of Star Alliance, you can redeem the miles for domestic flights on both United Airlines and US Airways. As is typical a domestic coach round trip ticket in the US is 25,000 miles or you can book a one-way ticket for 12,000 miles. I don’t understand why one-way isn’t 12,500 miles instead of 12,000 but that is what Lufthansa’s award chart says. If that is correct, the better deal would be to book each half of a trip as a one-way.

But 1st class on a 2 class configuration is the sweet spot coming in at only 35,000 miles round-trip or only 17,000 miles one-way on United. The reason for this is that United considers domestic 1st class on these flights to be business class. It’s too bad other airlines don’t have the same approach because that’s all it really is on these flights is business class. There is very little worthy of calling 1st class on US domestic 2 class flights.

I’m not one to shell out the miles to fly in business/first anyway but for only 10,000 more than normal it would be worth considering. It is certainly cheaper than you would pay if you booked using United miles. I think I will consider putting this on my next app-o-rama and using it for two economy class tickets instead.

Details of the offer:

  • Earn 20,000 award miles after your first purchase
  • Earn an additional 30,000 award miles when you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 90 days
  • Cardholders receive a companion ticket annually.
  • Enjoy 2 award miles per $1 on Miles & More integrated airline ticket purchases
  • Earn 1 award mile per $1 spent everywhere else
  • 0% Intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months after account opening, after that a variable APR currently 15.99% to 24.99% depending upon your creditworthiness.

There are also some great deals to be had on business class flights to Europe starting at 55,000 miles round-trip. You can see a list of the current specials on Lufthansa’s Mileage Bargain’s page. Just like British Airways, you should be aware of the large fuel surcharges that are tacked onto Lufthansa’s redemption’s on all partner airlines EXCEPT US Airways, LOT Polish, & United. Make sure you choose flights on only these 3 carriers to avoid getting slapped!

I do want everyone to be aware that I am compensated if you use my link to apply for this card. If you choose to apply for this card, I certainly appreciate your support. I make it a point to not push credit cards on my site. I’m sure you all feel the same, but it annoys the crap out of me when I see other bloggers pushing affiliate links when it really isn’t that great of deal and there is a better deal available. However I do not have any affiliate credit card links other than those with Barclay’s anyway and since this is a great offer I had to talk about it. Do your own research and choose offers that fit your needs! Thanks for the support!

UPDATED 5/4/13

Habsben on FlyerTalk discovered another non-affiliate link that is offering the Miles & More card with 50,000 miles but with a reduced spending requirement of only $2,500 miles.  However he did point out that with this offer, if Barclay’s doesn’t approve you for the World MasterCard they will approve you for the Platinum version with only 5,000 bonus miles. With the offer discussed above you would receive 50,000 miles even if you don’t get the World MasterCard. So if you are 100% positive you will get approved for the higher World version, then I would suggest using this offer. But you face the risk of only getting 5,000 if you are not approved.

  1. It isn’t because Lufthansa considers it business class; it is because United does. United gets to choose how those flights are loaded into the Star Alliance awards system and they chose to use the “I” bucket which is for business class awards. US uses “O” for the forward cabin on their domestic flights, making them first class awards for basically the same product.

Let me know what you are thinking!
